Frequently Asked Questions

Do braces or other types of orthodontic treatment hurt?

  • Initial placement of braces and all other treatments is painless. Once the teeth and/or jaws start to move, there is usually some mild discomfort at the very beginning of orthodontic treatment. This soreness goes away after a few days and can be very well controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers. With the modern, low-force, techniques that we provide, many patients report very little soreness.

How long does the treatment take and how often do I come in for appointments?

  • Treatment time varies widely depending on the type of treatment, but most treatments can be completed in 14 – 22 months. While in treatment, patients usually come in for appointments every 8 weeks.

How much does it cost?

  • Just like treatment time, treatment fees vary based on the difficulty, type, and length of treatment provided. At our office, however, the treatment fee covers all records, analysis, visits, appliances, retainers and follow-up. We also offer flexible payment plans that often require no down payment. Dental insurance usually covers a portion of this treatment fee.

When is the right time for a child to visit an orthodontist?

  • For children, there are two different types of treatment with two different age ranges where orthodontic treatment can be beneficial. For younger children (ages 7-11) with more severe developing problems such as severe overbite, underbite, crossbite and severe crowding, these problems are often ideally corrected at a younger age when there is growth remaining. Less severe problems, such as mild-modrate crowding, spacing, and mild bite issues, are often best treated after all permanent teeth have come in (usually around ages 12-14). Drs. Wu and Jolley can determine the right time to recommend orthodontic treatment for you or your child.
